I think I will like these speeches! Ok I read the Gettysburg address first. That was a very uplifting speech and so dedicated. What I got out of this speech is that he is telling us that through the trials that our country will face that we need to stand by our country and only become strong as a nation through these trials. Also when he said that the dead shall not have died in vain I think he is saying don’t let the problems that our men went to war for happen again because if we do that means that those men died in vain or for no reason. That is what I understood from that speech. The second speech that I read was the “cast down your bucket where you are” I liked this one. I felt that it was basically saying that for the people of his time that were distressed and felt that they had no one that they should look around and not judge people by race and they would find many more people willing to help them or be their friend. Also I think that when he said the cast down your bucket where you are I think he was showing that help can come in unexpected ways. The ship asked over and over again for water from their neighboring ship yet all along the help that they needed the most was right there underneath them. The third speech was “the solitude of self” this speech was about women’s rights. One thing that caught my attention was when she said that women must rely on themselves and that no matter how much we prefer to lean or be supported by men that we must make the voyage of life alone. I think that is very true because if you spend your whole life relying on other people to do things for you what will you do when those people are gone? Where will you be when your mom isn’t there to cook your dinner. I experienced this when I moved into the house I am in now. Haha and so far I have made like 3 actual meals in the past 2 months of living here. But this speech wasn’t just about women doing things on their own it was about them being allowed to do things on their own and not having to have the approval of a man in order to make a decision. I didn’t understand a few things in this speech it was very deep but I did enjoy reading it and it felt very inspiring and I think it is amazing that she spent most of her life fighting for women’s rights. i cant imagine working my whole life towards something and then never seeing it resolved. it's hard for me to imagine a time when women didnt have rights though. i cant imagine not being able to do things just because i am a woman. im not married or anything but if someone told me o i'm sorry i cant let you do that but if your husband wants to do it for you thats fine i would laugh at them. or if i was told that i was not able to vote because i was a women. i think we are all lucky to be born in a time that is not so much having to deal with these issuese. Its unfortunate that many women who fought so long for the rights that we have today do not get to experience the liberties that we take for granted…

I agree with you that the Gettysburg address is very uplifting. With the second one you read, the cast down your bucket one, I like when you said that help can come from unexpected ways. That was a really good way to put it. I really liked this speech as well. I really think he got his point across good. I also really like where you said if people would not judge others because of race and stuff that there would be a whole lot more people willing to help them. I think that is so true, even today. And especially in Memphis! With the third speech, I definitely did not find it as interesting as you did. I thought it was super boring and hard to read. But I do like how you pointed out that she said women have to rely on themselves, no matter how easy it is to rely on men or others. That is such a good point because I think in today's times, still we as women want equal rights and to be able to do everything men can do, and yet we still expect to be treated different and have extra things done for us. I'm not complaining because personally, I like this system. I definitely think we ended up with the better end of the deal. But still in a lot of different jobs, men still get payed more than women and women are still thought of as stupid kind of, especially if you are pretty. So we are not 100% equal yet. And I definetly agree with the cooking part!! I still go home so I can have home cooked meals!! I have to make frozen ones unless Tommy feels like cooking. He's the cooker, not me. LOL
I agree with you that what Lincoln said about not letting the men who have died for us die in vain. I liked the way you put it in words because it was hard for me! Lol. I also like the "cast down your bucket where you are" speech too. I think that was my favorite one. And it is true, even nowadays that if people would stop judging one another by the color of their skin, they would get a lot of better feedback and peace in this world. There are a lot of people out in this world who is willing to help others but there are a lot of those who always like to judge a book by its cover as well. And the speech about "the solitude of self" I totally agree with you when you said that women must rely on themselves and that no matter how much we prefer to lean or be support by men, we must make the voyage alone. If we are to always depend on men for everything, it is hurting us as much as it may be helping us. We must learn to depend on ourselves because we will not always be able to depend on others!
